Welcome to Club 389, Ottawa's newest chess club!   Tournaments are held weekly at 389 Richmond Road.

February/March 2009:

Now that the bus sxtrike is over, the club is back up and runing.   Please join us - support chess in Ottawa!

DETAILS:
What: Weekly chess tournament with regularly-updated ratings and occasional prizes.
Where: 2nd floor of Westboro Legion, 389 Richmond Road
When: Every Monday evening from 7:00 to 9:30 PM.  Casual play can continue at a bar (called "Puzzles") conveniently located across the street (and coincidentally featuring chessboard-painted tables).
Who: Anyone may attend.  Players entering a tournament will receive a Club389 chess rating.
Format: Varies depending on attendance, but usually we aim for a round-robin, so that on a given night everyone gets a chance to play everyone else at least once.
Control: Time control might also vary depending on attendance.  So far most nights have consisted of 5-minute games, but we've had a couple of rapid nights.  Suggestions are welcome but bear in mind that we have to be out of the hall by 9:30pm.
Fee: Tournament fee is $2 per person per night.  The legion might charge $1 for spectators or casual players.
Refreshments: Beer and a limited selection of junk food is available at the Legion for $3.75 a bottle (domestic).
Please note: No hat-wearing allowed in the Legion.  No outside food or drinks.

TOURNAMENT #7

Monday December 15th 2008

Format:  Double round-robin; 5 minutes per player per game.

Simon Paul Daryl
1. Simon Perkins X 1/2 2/2 3/4
2. Paul Abrams 1/2 X 0.5/2 1.5/4
3. Daryl Bertrand 0/2 1.5/2 X 1.5/4

Paul's summary of this event:
This was the first Monday of the bus strike, so not many people showed up, although Eric did drop by around 9pm for a couple of casual games.  Due to the number of players, we decided to play 5-minute games instead of the planned 15-minute games.  Daryl's mind seemed elsewhere as he lost both of his games against Simon and allowed a half-point out of two against me.  Needless to say, Simon had a good night, winning the tournament with three points in four games.

TOURNAMENT #6

Monday December 8th 2008

Time control:  5 minutes per player per game.

Daryl 5/5
Peter Arseneau 4/5
Paul A. 3/5
Simon P. 2/5
Dennis 1/5
Dan S. 0/5

Daryl's summary of this event:
Monday night at club 389 saw two prizes of gift cards to starbucks. I decided not to take any prizes.
I won with 5/5, Peter Arseneau grabbed 2nd place and a gift card. with Paul Abrams continuing his hot play to take 3rd and a gift card.
I will probably have small prizes again next week as Tom O'Donnell has been coming every 2nd week, or as I like to call it, a "Tom-Week".
Every once in a tom-week we will have prizes or snacks, so it's worth dropping by! Next week I think we'll try 15 minutes per side time control.

TOURNAMENT #5

December 01, 2008

Time control:  5 minutes per player per game.

 Tom 11/12
 Paul A. 7/10
 Daryl 6/8
 Simon Perkins 5/10
 Kevin 4/8
 Dan 2/10
 Dennis 2/11
 Richard Goralczyk 0/5

Daryl's summary of this event:
Tom O'Donnell pranced through the field like a dewy meadow to take 1st in the incomplete monday night blitz tourney. Tom's score of 11 dwarfed the score of 2nd place Paul Abrams, who had 7.

I wonder if there is a challenger out there who could give Tom a game of blitz? Only Dean Hergott comes to mind but I'm sure there are some blitz specialist masters out there somewhere..

TOURNAMENT #4

November 24, 2008

Time control:  20 minutes per player per game.

 Daryl 3/3
 Paul A. 2/3
 Kevin 1/3
 Dennis 0/3

Daryl's summary of this event:
Daryl B. won the Monday active at 389 Richmond. Paul Abrams rebounded to capture 2nd.
The longer games were a nice change, however we'll be back to blitz this coming monday. Hopefully some of our stronger players will drop by to settle the score.

TOURNAMENT #3

November 17, 2008

Time control:  5 minutes per player per game.

 Tom 9.5/10
 Paul B. 9/9
 Daryl 6.5/10
 Kevin 4/9
 Ronaldo3/11
 Paul A. 2/7
 Mark D. 2/7
 Dennis 1/11

Daryl's summary of this event:
Tom O'Donnell won the monday night blitz double tourney with a combined 9.5/10. He surrendered only a draw to me in a game which proved the old chess adage "Everything mates except Qe8".

Paul Beckwith finished 2nd with a perfect 9/9 score, however he somehow forgot to play Tom. That sets up a potential showdown in two weeks. Ronaldo and Kevin Wood had break-out performances and 10 people dropped by.

Finally a few people have found the club through this website, so thanks to Neil for giving us a connection to the chess scene.

TOURNAMENT #2

November 10, 2008

Time control:  5 minutes per player per game.

 Dave Gordon 6/7
 Daryl Bertrand 5/7
 Paul Beckwith 2/2
 Paul Abrams 4/6
 Dan Sachs 3/6
 Boots Ronaldo 1.5/6
 Kevin Wood 1/6
 Dennis Lortie 0.5/6

Daryl's summary of this event:

Nine people braved the spitting rain to attend the monday night blitz tourney.

Dave Gordon sacrificed both his bishop and his favorite television shows en route to a 6/7 score. I came in second with 5/7. Paul Beckwith took five byes then beat both Dave and I with a combined four seconds remaining on his clock to capture third place. His 2538 performance rating was noteworthy.

More participants are expected next week and we found a nice little pub to go after the club for more blitz action. Check out "puzzles" pub on Richmond rd. across the street and slightly to the east of the legion if you arrive late.

TOURNAMENT #1

Our first tournament was held on November 3rd, 2008.  There were three door prizes, including a hardcover edition of Kasparov's "My Great Predecessors" vol. 5.   First prize in the tournament was a gift certificte for Strategy Games which went to Tom O'Donnell; second prize went to Dave Gordon and was a gift certificate for Starbucks.

Tournament Results:
November 3rd 2008  (Single round-robin; 5-minute games)
Tom Dave Daryl Paul Eric Alex Kevin  Dan  Score
1.   Tom O'Donnell X 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 7.0
2.    Dave Gordon 0 X 1 1 1 1 1 1  6.0
3.    Daryl Bertrand 0 0 X 1 1 1 1 1  5.0
4.    Paul Abrams 0 0 0 X 1 0.5 1 1  3.5
5.    Eric Van Dusen 0 0 0 0 X 1 1 1  3.0
6.     Alexander Moffat 0 0 0 0.5 0 X 0 1 1.5
7.     Kevin Wood 0 0 0 0 0 1 X 0 1.0
8.    Dan Sachs 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 X 1.0

Tom's summary of this event:
Ten people showed up. I only recognized three: Daryl, Dave Gordon and Eric Van Dusen. As far as I could tell the rest were not tournament players. Nevertheless, most of them were actually very strong blitz players all things considered. None worse than 1500, I would say, and a couple would be at least 1700-1800, I think.

There was an impromptu blitz tournament won by yours truly 7-0, but not easily. I was probably lost against Daryl at one point and my last-round opponent, whose name I forget, gave me a lot of trouble. Dave Gordon came in second with 6-1. The site was comfortable and reasonably well lit. Also quiet from any outside distractions. Having beer service downstairs was a big bonus. A good time was had by me, and probably by everyone else, too. I will certainly be back.

I am sure Daryl will have more details.

Daryl's summary of this event:
Like Tom said, things went pretty well for the 1st night of Monday blitz.
There were tournament and door prizes, and fully half of the people who came won prizes in the end. Tom handily won the tournament and the stategy games gift cert. while Dave Gordon in 2nd place won a gift card to starbucks, which has a location up the street from us. Alexander Moffat won the Kasparov book.
The location was well recieved and a good mix of amatuers and tournament players came out. Reasonably priced beer and various free snacks were also nice. There will be house ratings and occasional prizes in the future, and many more people are expected to visit. All for the low price of 2 bucks a night, free for caissa cafe members.

So come out next week or stop by on a Monday night in the future to shoot a couple games!
